How to Make Your Blog Sparkle

in Photography Tips on 06/24/14

It’s tough to differentiate your blog from any of the other blogs out there, but with a few quick tips, your writing can catch the eye of any passers-by.

Let’s get personal—per-son-al!

An interesting or funny personal story makes any blog post better. We are in the age of sharing, so spill those anecdotes from your daily life. I could just tell you that I have some very attractive legs, even though I rarely work out and my diet is far from “clean” these days. But you know what proves it? Being hit, then hit on in downtown. Pull up a chair.

Last summer, I embarked on a short trip from my office to a downtown courthouse. As I approached a police station, I noticed a policewoman in an idling police car and cautiously walked behind her vehicle just as she decided to reverse at a speed of at least 3 mph, striking me squarely in the legs.

I continued on, ignoring the potential consequences my recent run-in with the po-po would have on both my modeling and softball career, when a dapper young man put my mind at ease, telling me that I have the nicest legs he’s ever seen.

See what I did there? Don’t just convey your message with generic words! Tell it with a story.

Punctuate! You speak with inflection, so write with punctuation. As writers, we have so many different punctuation devices at our disposal: the m-dash, parenthesis, ellipses, and semi or even standalone colons (to name a few).

So learn the rules and use them well. No one wants to feel as though they’re being yelled at because you’re literally exclaiming everything you write, but without adding some punctuation pizazz, you might just put them to sleep.

Keep it Short. Whether you prefer a life partner that you literally look up to or one who will always be beneath you—when it comes to writing, keep it short.

I don’t know about you, but I find myself skimming even my favorite blogs when they have long, blocky paragraphs. Convey your message and be done!

I think that’s my cue! Dive into your writing and use all of the creative tools you have at your disposal to make it really sparkle!
